Warrington House Dental Surgery, Bristol

Warrington House have transformed their main treatment room by retaining their existing base units which were completely fit for purpose and opted to replace instead their worn laminated worktops, none compliant stainless steel sinks and taps and chrome handles.
"I just wanted to let you know that we are very pleased with the new surgery worktops. Please pass on our thanks to Billy and David. I appreciated the fact that I was kept informed as to what was going to happen and when. Billy arrived when he said he would and left the surgery clean and tidy. It is surprising what a difference the worktops have made to the surgery, patients are convinced that we have replaced the units as well." Chris White (Practice Manager)

Lister House Dental Surgery, London

Lister House is a busy dental practice based in Wimpole Street in the heart of the West End of London owned and operated by James Hull and Associates. Our brief from the client was to design, manufacture and install a new interior that reflected the quality of the practitioners and the variety and quality of the work they undertook whilst at the same time keeping the practice open and fully functioning. This was particularly challenging as there was a limited shared access into the building.

By removing a party wall we were able to open out the reception and waiting area to accommodate a large Walnut and White Gloss Laminate Reception Desk for two receptionists and fixed seating for up to 16 patients. Into the seating, hidden from view, we incorporated large storage spaces for their stationary and other equipment. To further increase the sense of space and integration we removed a stud wall along the corridor and replaced it with white gloss planters and a bespoke printed screen of a street scene of Wimpole Street. This commission was undertaken by the Bristol based photographer and artist, Mike Kleinsteuber and provides a fascinating and compelling picture of the street outside with its many colourful and detailed fascias.

As this is a very busy practice, space is always at a premium, so by redesigning and reallocating space we were able to create a new Practice Managers Office, Secretaries Office, Sterilisation Room (HTM01-05 Compliant), a 7 meter run of floor to ceiling HTM 71 compliant Clinical Storage Units to store all their clinical equipment and a new Walnut Finished Toilet Interior. By liaising closely with the practice every inch was used to the maximum. Both ourselves and the client are proud of the result which we all worked so hard to achieve.

“Thankyou for your help with a difficult project - it was well worth it and we are all so proud of our new practice." Pat Riddell, Practice Manager
Lister House, 11 - 12 Wimpole St, London

LOCATION, LOCATION...
(Article written and featured in various Dental Journals about the project)

London’s Wimpole Street  has been home to a handful of artists and writers and at least one fictional character (Dr Henry Higgins in George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, or My Fair Lady for those who prefer the musical version!) but it also has long been associated with private medical practice, in common with its better known neighbour, Harley Street just around the corner. Wimpole Street is home to the Royal Society of Medicine (No.1) and the British Dental Association (No.64) and a number of medical and dental clinics, including the JHA Lister House specialist referral dental practice at 11-12, Wimpole Street . The 1930’s front and back facades of the building are listed while the interior boasts many original Art Deco features so the major refurbishment and reorganisation of the practice presented additional challenges.

With five surgeries on the ground floor and a large waiting/reception area along with six surgeries and offices upstairs, when the practice decided to relinquish the ground floor lease, they needed to turn the upstairs offices space into the waiting area, create new surgeries and a new decontamination room.

As with all dental practice makeovers, the skill is to combine patient comfort and an aesthetically pleasing ambience with the highest standards of dental technology while ensuring compliance with CQC and HTM01-05 regulatory requirements regarding infection control, and keep the practice open throughout!

Bristol based designer Simon Kohn was the man who took up that challenge; "The idea was to create a new practice interior that reflected and complemented the quality of the practitioners, that functioned as a space for clients and staff whilst at the same time condensing the work of the ground and 1st floor into just the first floor without making it feel claustrophobic and chaotic."

The project involved developing several completely new areas including;

  • Reception area and new contemporary reception desk
  • Patient lounge with adequate seating
  • Fully HTM01-05 compliant sterilisation room
  • Practice Managers Office

A new data and electric system had to be installed, the old air conditioning had to be tackled, the main door and entrance area needed a makeover and of course, the practice had to be decorated throughout.

Once the practice team had been reassured that the scheme would work and had pored over Simon’s drawings, plans and sample boards, negotiations with the landlords completed after some delay, then work could begin. Inevitably a project on this scale will encounter some problems but the biggest challenge to Simon and his team was limited access and tight working spaces, "We couldn’t work out of practice hours because of the residential apartments above so we had to work around and alongside busy practitioners throughout their working day so there were always the considerations of noise and dirt but everyone who worked on Lister House is very experienced in working on health care projects and you need that  strong, experienced team supporting each other and working with the practice staff."

Pat Riddle, Practice Manager at Lister House says the weeks of chaos and delays have all been worthwhile, "We worked with Simon throughout  and his drawings and plans were meticulous. It wasn’t easy, working through the disruption and the problems along the way - not just for us but for the patients who lived through it but everyone is delighted and really pleased with the end result."

Lister House now boasts a stunning new front entrance with walnut doors and joinery and the walnut theme continues into reception with a contemporary walnut and high gloss laminate desk that incorporates hidden LED lights. The new Practice Manager’s office is an elegant, functional and contemporary working space  but to effectively condense two floors into one meant that Simon had to be very imaginative in maximising the space available, "For example a built in cupboard became not only a walnut feature cupboard but also an upholstered seat for two incorporating additional/ hidden storage in the seat so the waiting area has seating for 14 people and 12 metres of hidden storage. In the corridors we faced the challenge of maximising storage using contemporary HTM71 units."

One of the most striking features is the etched polycarbonate street scene depicting Wimpole Street by Mike Kleinsteuber that is a piece of contemporary art as well as a functioning screen above high gloss white laminate planters.

The project was completed in around four months and it is clearly a great success, combining functionality and clinical compliance with style and space in a way that has updated Lister House without compromising on its heritage. Both Simon and Pat agree their advice to others contemplating a major refurbishment would be, "You can't over prepare - try to work your way through all the detail prior to starting on site rather than when you are actually doing it!"
