Special FeaturePenthouse Apartment, Clifton Village, Bristol
Recently Simon Kohn Furniture Ltd were commissioned to design and fit out a wonderfully positioned penthouse suite in the heart of Clifton Village, Bristol. The apartment has panoramic views over Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Avon Gorge. The challenge for us was to compliment the exceptional external views that exist out of the apartment with a classic contemporary interior that will stand the test of time and completely enhance the living space. Because the clients were moving from a large detached house to an apartment with open plan living it was imperative to utilize all the available space without creating a sense of overcrowding and claustrophobia. We looked at the living space very critically and determined the maximum size and shape of the kitchen, dining area, study and lounge. We then produced detailed drawings, samples of materials and other finishes for the clients to consider. Once the drawings were agreed, full sized patterns were produced and positioned in the apartment in the exact position drawn. This gave us the opportunity to look critically at the space and ensure that whilst we were maximizing its potential we were not trying to pack too much in. Seeing the space laid out in this way with all the patterns positioned on the floor was an essential part of the design development. Samples of polished American Black Walnut were brought to the apartment to see how it looked in the light. The colours and tones in the Walnut looked superb in the light and it was chosen. Throughout the manufacturing process the clients visited the workshop regularly to check the work in progress and liaise with ourselves over the detail. The whole process was a collaboration and when the manufacture was complete they both came and approved the completed items. Using our own expert fitters the installation was undertaken with the greatest care and attention to detail to ensure the furniture fitted perfectly into the apartment. Working alongside our electrical and plumbing contractors we were able to achieve a seamless integration of services and as you can see from the photographs, the highest level of finishes.
